Zydus Cadila’s “Virafin” Approved For Treating Moderate Covid Cases

Zydus Cadila received approval from the Comptroller General of Medicines of India (DGCI) on Friday for the use of “Virafin”, pegylated interferon alpha-2b (PegIFN) in the treatment of moderate COVID infection -19 in adults.

A single dose subcutaneous regimen of the antiviral Virafin will make treatment more convenient for patients. When given early during COVID-19, Virafin will help patients recover faster and avoid many of the complications, the company said.

In a statement, Cadila Health noted that “the drug has also shown efficacy against other viral infections.”

Speaking on the development, Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Cadila Healthcare Limited, said: “The fact that we are able to offer therapy that drastically reduces viral load when given early can help better disease management. – the time needed for patients and we will continue to provide them with access to essential therapies in this battle against COVID-19. “

In its phase III clinical trials, the therapy had shown better clinical improvement in patients with COVID-19. During trials, a higher proportion of patients administered with the PegIFN arm were RT-PCR negative on day 7. The drug provides faster viral clearance and has several additional advantages over other antiviral agents, further states the press release.

The DGCI’s development and nod comes at a time when India is battling the second wave of coronavirus.

The central government, in one of its major announcements, decided to administer COVID-19 vaccines to all ages over 18.

India has registered 332,730 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the highest peak in one day since the outbreak of the pandemic last year. India has passed the 3 lakh COVID-19 case mark for two consecutive days now. This brought the cumulative tally of COVID infection in the country to 1.62,63,695.

The country has recorded 2,263 new deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Up to 1,86920 people have succumbed to the viral infection in India so far. There are currently 24,28,616 active COVID-19 cases in the country.
