Twitter owner Jack Dorsey said on Tuesday that he would convert the proceeds from a digital auction of tweets made on the platform for bitcoin for the charity.
“Just Setting Your Twitter” – The first tweet went live for sale after Dorsey listed it as a unique digital signature on a website to sell tweets as non-fake tokens (NXT).
NXTs are digital files that serve as digital signatures to authenticate the owner of photos, videos, and other online media. Dorsey, a known bitcoin enthusiast, said the auction would end on March 21.
The payment company Square, led by Dorsey, invested $ 170 million (roughly Rs. 1,240 crore) in bitcoin last month, adding to the mainstream acceptance of the digital currency, garnering support from many large investors.
Dorsey’s 15-year-old tweet may attract bidders to pay a higher price for digital memorabilia. The tweet’s highest bid was $ 2.5 million (approximately Rs 18 crore) as of 17:05 GMT (10:35 pm IST) on Tuesday.
The proceeds are being donated as a fundraising grant to give cash directly to families experiencing extreme poverty in Africa.
