Tesla to build large battery for Texas Grid to power 20,000 homes: report

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk will build a large battery that will connect to the Texas grid, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.

Gambit Energy Storage LLC, which is registered as a Tesla Unit, is building a more than 100 megawatt energy storage project in Angleton, Texas, according to the report.

The battery could power around 20,000 homes in the summer.

Tesla could not be reached for comment.

It comes days after a mid-February storm temporarily knocked out about half of the state’s power plants, causing blackouts that killed dozens of people and pushed electricity prices up to 10 times the normal rate.

In 2016, Tesla won a contract to supply a 20 megawatt energy storage system to a substation owned by the California utility Southern California Edison.

In other Tesla-related news, the electric car maker was assured of cutting manufacturing costs in India. The government is prepared to offer incentives to ensure Tesla’s cost of production is lower than China’s if the automaker commits to manufacturing its electric vehicles in India, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told Reuters.

Gadkari’s speech comes weeks after billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla registered a business in India with the aim of entering the country, possibly as early as mid-2021. Sources familiar with the matter said Tesla plans to start by importing and selling its Model 3 electric sedan in India.

“Rather than assembling (the cars) in India, they should manufacture the whole product in the country by hiring local vendors. Then we can give higher concessions,” Gadkari said in an interview, without giving details of the incentives offered.

“The government will make sure that Tesla’s cost of production is the lowest relative to the world, even China, when they start manufacturing their cars in India. We will make sure,” he said.

India wants to boost local manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs), batteries and other components to cut costly imports and reduce pollution in its major cities.

It comes amid a global race by automakers to jump-start electric vehicle production as countries strive to cut carbon emissions.
