PUBG Mobile Reports 1 Billion Accumulated Downloads Since 2018 Launch

Chinese tech giant Tencent said on Thursday that its cellphone action game PUBG Mobile has surpassed the billion accumulated downloads outside of China, making it one of the most successful games in the world.

PUBG Mobile, the mobile version of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, in which a group of players compete against each other until only one fighter is alive, has been hugely popular since the battle royale style game launched three years ago.

According to data analytics firm Sensor Tower, the latest download numbers would only place it behind Kiloo Games’ Subway Surfers and King Digital Entertainment’s Candy Crush Saga, two casual titles that are relatively easy to play and appeal to a wide audience. public.

“PUBG Mobile achieved 1 billion downloads shows that core games, in this case a PC IP-based AAA Battle Royale title of the same name, can achieve the same scale in the mobile space,” said Daniel Ahmad , analyst at Niko Partners. Tencent, the world’s largest video game company by revenue, has another battle royale title in China called Peacekeeper Elite. The announcement came as Tencent said its online gaming revenue grew 29% in the fourth quarter, due to an increase in the number of paid video game users in China and international markets.

Its two hit games, Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, continued to dominate the charts in China and internationally, respectively, in the same quarter, he said.

Tencent said it aims to get half of its gaming revenue from overseas.

Its LightSpeed and Quantum studios as well as its Timi studios have opened stores in Los Angeles, with the goal of “creating content with original intellectual property and global appeal.”
