The covid has infected 2,95441 people in India and killed 2,023 in the past 24 hours, in a grim record. Even as the country stirs under the second wave of Covid, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on states to use lockdowns only as a last resort.

This is the seventh day in a row that the country has seen more than two new cases. The total of over 1.56 crore of Covid cases in India is the second highest in the world, behind the United States and ahead of Brazil. 1,825,553 deaths have been recorded to date.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Tuesday evening. He said the need of the hour was to save the country from a lockdown, asking state governments to only deal with lockdowns as a last resort and to focus on micro-containment areas.
Maharashtra – the worst-affected state – reported 62,097 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total to over 39.6 lakh. Another 519 patients died from the infection. Along with lockdown-like restrictions that are already in place in the state, other restrictions are likely to come into effect. Ministers recommended a full lockdown to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and left the final decision to him.
After Maharashtra, the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of infections.
Delhi reported 28,395 cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday as it recorded its largest peak in one day. After several SOS calls from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Minister of Health Satyendar Jain for oxygen supply to hospitals, some of the city’s largest hospitals were relieved after receiving medical oxygen supplies.
Kerala recorded its highest peak in COVID-19 infections in a single day on Tuesday with 19,577 cases, bringing the state’s total to over 12.72 lakh. The deaths of 28 patients were reported on the same day.
In neighboring Karnataka, the BS Yediyurappa government has announced a tougher set of measures to try to control the huge peak of Covid seen by the state. These include a statewide night and weekend curfew and the closure of many schools and businesses in an attempt to avoid gatherings. Karnataka and the capital Bengaluru have reported single-day highs of new cases with 21,794 new cases in the state, including 13,782 from Bengaluru.
In Uttar Pradesh, nearly 30,000 new cases have been detected. The state will offer the Covid vaccine for free from May 1, when India’s vaccine network will expand to include all people over 18.
Mizoram on Tuesday became the first state in the northeast to declare a weeklong lockdown from Tuesday to April 26. The state also has the second lowest number of COVID-19 cases in the country after Lakshadweep, with a total of 5,085 confirmed cases and 12 deaths, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.
More than 29.9 doses of lakh vaccine were administered on Tuesday. More than 13.01 crore of vaccine doses have been administered since the Covid mega vaccination campaign began in January.
