Last week we saw renderings of the iPhone 13 mini, which showed a slightly redesigned camera with both lenses arranged diagonally instead of one on top of the other. The latest leak, a handy photo of a mini prototype, shows the exact same design and lends credibility to the renderings.
Note that this is only a prototype – Apple is months away from starting mass production of the 13 Series, so the design is not set in stone. If Cupertino chooses this design, it will likely carry over to the larger iPhone 13 as well.

This can be seen in the CAD-based renderings by xleaks7 and Pigtou, also from last week. The two Pro models will likely remain unchanged, however, as they need to install three cameras in their saloon (plus LiDAR). All Apple Pro EAP made a video on the design of the iPhone 13 mini and Pro Max and even 3D printed mannequins.
Either way, the reason for the new layout may be to install a larger sensor. And by the sound of it, the camera bumps all over the 13 series will get thicker.
