Absconding ex-Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh appears at Crime Branch unit – ET Government

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, who faces multiple extortion cases in Maharashtra and has been missing since October, suggesting he had fled the country, reported on Thursday morning at the Mumbai City Police Unit 11 office.

“I will join the investigation as instructed by the court,” Param Bir Singh told reporters at Mumbai airport earlier today, after flying from Chandigarh, where he surfaced on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court granted the former Mumbai police chief protection from arrest on Monday, raising eyebrows. He has been invited to join the investigation into the extortion charges against him.

“Param Bir Singh does not want to run away and does not want to run anywhere” but his life is in danger, “his lawyer told the court, informing him that Singh was in India.

“This should not appear in court, I’m afraid. I have full confidence in the system. I am ready to appear in a court of the CBI (but) I am harassed. I am suffering”, argued Param Bir .

To this, the court replied, “If the former Mumbai Police Commissioner says he faces a threat from the Mumbai Police, then what kind of message is he sending? However, the court ultimately ruled that the officer should join the investigation, but would not be arrested.

Previously, the same court had refused to grant such protection to Param Bir, asking him to reveal himself first. “Where are you? Are you in this country or outside? In any state? Where are you? No protection until we know where you are,” the court said.

The former Mumbai police chief, who was declared a “declared offender” by a Mumbai court, has not reported for work since May. He first surfaced on Wednesday, claiming he was in Chandigarh and would be heading to Mumbai soon.

The IPS officer who faces multiple extortion charges in Maharashtra told news stations he was in Chandigarh. He also appeared on Telegram on Wednesday evening, but then deleted his account from the social messaging app.

He was transferred from the post of police commissioner in Mumbai and he brought allegations of corruption against the Minister of the Interior of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh. He was transferred after the arrest of Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze in the case of an SUV containing explosives found near the home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani “Antilia” and the suspicious death of businessman Mansukh Hiran.
